Power, Action, And Belief: A New Sociology Of Knowledge?

Type of work: Journal. This paper outlines a new approach to the study of power, that of the sociology of translation. Starting from three principles, those of agnosticism impartiality between actors engaged in controversy , generalised symmetry the commitment to explain conflicting viewpoints in the same terms and free association the abandonment of all a priori distinctions between the natural and the social , the paper describes a scientific and economic controversy about the causes for the decline in the population of scallops in St. Brieuc Bay and the attempts by three marine biologists to develop a conservation strategy for that population. In conclusion it is noted that translation is a process, never a completed accomplishment, and it may as in the empirical case considered fail. Citizen Participation in policy-making: internalizing externalities and preventing conflict through planning and evaluating.

Social capital has been the object of several scientific publications for decades, especially in the field of education. Although there is a degree of conceptual similarity across the many and multi-disciplinary approaches to social capital such as networks, norms, and trust , there remains an ontological issue: an absence of consensus on what social capital actually is Gearin, ; Ivana, ; Van Deth, In this study, I recognize the conceptual messiness surrounding social capital in order to examine one facet of the global education space. I build my argument through research on the shifts in social capital of students engaging in long-distance mobility Brazil to Ireland in the course of their higher education. For these students, the loss of the characteristics of previously performed assemblages demands new gatherings, which in turn produces new effects. In global student mobility landscapes, change experiences are heightened as mobility potentially denudes previously existing networks with their respective norms and degrees of trust enacted among their members. That there are diverse actors that assemble in unique configurations in the practices of global student mobility would suggest the need for particular ontological elaborations that are capable of capturing the complexity of those practices.

This paper describes the theory of the actor-network, a body of theoretical and empirical writing which treats social relations, including power and organization, as network effects. The theory is distinctive because it insists that networks are materially heterogeneous and argues that society and organization would not exist if they were simply social. Agents, texts, devices, architectures are all generated in, form part of, and are essential to, the networks of the social. And in the first instance, all should be analyzed in the same terms. Accordingly, in this view, the task of sociology is to characterize the ways in which materials join together to generate themselves and reproduce institutional and organizational patterns in the networks of the social.

John Law born 16 May , [1] is a sociologist and science and technology studies scholar, currently on the Faculty of Social Sciences at the Open University and key proponent of Actor-network theory. Actor-network theory, sometimes abbreviated to ANT, is a social science approach for describing and explaining social, organisational, scientific and technological structures, processes and events. It assumes that all the components of such structures whether these are human or otherwise form a network of relations that can be mapped and described in the same terms or vocabulary. ANT strives to map relations that are simultaneously material between things and 'semiotic' between concepts , for instance, the interactions in a bank involve both people and their ideas, and computers.

I discuss the ways in which each of them has evolved. But what reason? Other attempts may have followed these, but I remain unaware of their existence, much less of their fate. As for the rest, I remain oblivious to what happened to the new perspectives announced in , or the new directions announced in , or the hermeneutic sociology of knowledge announced in

Notes on the theory of the actor-network: Ordering, strategy, and heterogeneity
