Data Mining refers to a process by which patterns are extracted from data. Such patterns often provide insights into relationships that can be used to improve business decision making. Statistical data mining tools and techniques can be roughly grouped according to their use for clustering, classification, association, and prediction. Clustering refers to data mining tools and techniques by which a set of cases are placed into natural groupings based upon their measured characteristics. Since the number of characteristics is often large, a multivariate measure of similarity between cases needs to be employed.

Information-Statistical Data Mining

Data mining is a process of discovering patterns in large data sets involving methods at the intersection of machine learning , statistics , and database systems. The term "data mining" is a misnomer , because the goal is the extraction of patterns and knowledge from large amounts of data, not the extraction mining of data itself. The book Data mining: Practical machine learning tools and techniques with Java [8] which covers mostly machine learning material was originally to be named just Practical machine learning , and the term data mining was only added for marketing reasons. The actual data mining task is the semi-automatic or automatic analysis of large quantities of data to extract previously unknown, interesting patterns such as groups of data records cluster analysis , unusual records anomaly detection , and dependencies association rule mining , sequential pattern mining. This usually involves using database techniques such as spatial indices. These patterns can then be seen as a kind of summary of the input data, and may be used in further analysis or, for example, in machine learning and predictive analytics.

DOI: Abstract Data mining is a new discipline lying at the interface of statistics, database technology, pattern recognition, machine learning, and other areas. It is concerned with the secondary analysis of large databases in order to find previously unsuspected relationships which are of interest or value to the database owners.

Data analysis is defined as a process of cleaning, transforming, and modeling data to discover useful information for business decision-making. The purpose of Data Analysis is to extract useful information from data and taking the decision based upon the data analysis. A simple example of Data analysis is whenever we take any decision in our day-to-day life is by thinking about what happened last time or what will happen by choosing that particular decision. This is nothing but analyzing our past or future and making decisions based on it. For that, we gather memories of our past or dreams of our future. So that is nothing but data analysis. Now same thing analyst does for business purposes, is called Data Analysis.
