Membrane lipids are a group of compounds structurally similar to fats and oils which form the double-layered surface of all cells lipid bilayer. The three major classes of membrane lipids are phospholipids , glycolipids , and cholesterol. Lipids are amphiphilic: they have one end that is soluble in water 'polar' and an ending that is soluble in fat 'nonpolar'.

Hundreds of different lipid species are present in eukaryotic cell membranes.

Figure 1. Hydrophobic lipids in the fur of aquatic mammals, such as this river otter, protect them from the elements. Lipids include a diverse group of compounds that are largely nonpolar in nature. This is because they are hydrocarbons that include mostly nonpolar carbon—carbon or carbon—hydrogen bonds. Lipids perform many different functions in a cell. Cells store energy for long-term use in the form of fats. Lipids also provide insulation from the environment for plants and animals Figure 1.

Membrane lipid

Lipid , any of a diverse group of organic compounds including fats , oils , hormones , and certain components of membranes that are grouped together because they do not interact appreciably with water. One type of lipid, the triglycerides , is sequestered as fat in adipose cells , which serve as the energy-storage depot for organisms and also provide thermal insulation. Some lipids such as steroid hormones serve as chemical messengers between cells , tissues , and organs , and others communicate signals between biochemical systems within a single cell. The membranes of cells and organelles structures within cells are microscopically thin structures formed from two layers of phospholipid molecules. Membranes function to separate individual cells from their environments and to compartmentalize the cell interior into structures that carry out special functions.

Unlike other biomolecule groups, lipids are not defined by the presence of specific structural characteristics. Lipids are insoluble biomolecules, defined by an overall lack of polarity necessary for solubility in water-based solutions. In popular culture, fats are synonymous with lipids, giving lipids a negative role in diet and health. However, lipids play vital roles in many cellular processes including energy storage, structural support, protection, and communication. Common lipid groups include waxes, steroids, fats, and phospholipids.

NCBI Bookshelf. Lipids are compounds that are insoluble in water but are soluble in organic solvents such as ether and chloroform. Lipids that are important to our discussion include fats and oils triglycerides or triacyglycerols , fatty acids, phospholipids, and cholesterol. Fats and oils are esters of glycerol and three fatty acids.

The study of lipids has developed into a research field of increasing importance as their multiple biological roles in cell biology, physiology and pathology are becoming better understood. The Lipid Metabolites and Pathways Strategy LIPID MAPS consortium is actively involved in an integrated approach for the detection, quantitation and pathway reconstruction of lipids and related genes and proteins at a systems-biology level. A key component of this approach is a bioinformatics infrastructure involving a clearly defined classification of lipids, a state-of-the-art database system for molecular species and experimental data and a suite of user-friendly tools to assist lipidomics researchers. Lipids are a diverse and ubiquitous group of compounds which have many key biological functions, such as acting as structural components of cell membranes, serving as energy storage sources and participating in signaling pathways.

Lipid Biochemistry

Lipids are a diverse group of molecules that all share the characteristic that at least a portion of them is hydrophobic.

2.8: Structure and Function - Lipids and Membranes
