American art : history and culture

Based on the archives of the Avery Architectural Library of Columbia University and the New York Historical Society, this refreshing portrait of one of America's most prominent architects is at the same time a document of the sweeping social and cultural changes taking place in the country at the turn of the twentieth century. A biography of Stanford White and more, the book recovers a neglected yet significant part of White's career—a career that not only set the bar for twentieth-century architecture but also defined the newly emerging profession of interior design. The designer of such landmarks as the Washington Square Arch, the New York Herald and Tiffany Buildings, and the homes of captains of American industry, Stanford White is a legendary figure in the history of American architecture. Yet while the exteriors and floor plans of his designs have been extensively studied and written about, no book has fully examined the other aspect of his career, which claimed at least half of his time and creativity. Wayne Craven's work offers the first study of Stanford White as an interior decorator and a dealer in antiques and the fine arts. Craven also offers a vivid portrait of the sweeping social and cultural changes taking place in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

American Art set the standard for American art survey courses for the last decade by providing a thorough and engaging chronology of American art, including painting, sculpture, architecture, decorative arts, photography, folk art, and graphic arts. Wayne Craven presents art and artists within the context of their times, including insights into the intellectual, spiritual, and political environment. Along the way, Craven charts the growth of a distinctly American art culture. The resulting book is as much a history of American culture as of American art. Here is the most thorough, well-researched, and beautifully illustrated study ever to examine American art from a cultural perspective.

Using transactions from fine art auctionsfor 42 leading American contemporary artists Iestimate the relationship between the value of apainting and the artist's age at the date of itsexecution. The econometric estimates show that artistsborn before were likely to have produced theirmost valuable work late in their careers, whereasartists born in the s and '30s were more likely tohave done their most valuable work at an early age. Comparison of these results to evidence drawn from arthistory textbooks and retrospective exhibitionsfurthermore indicates that these artists' mostvaluable work has also been that most highly regardedby scholars. I argue that the shift across generationsin the shape of these artists' age-price profiles wasa result of the evolution of modern painting and agrowth in the demand for contemporary American artduring the s and '60s.
