The Ethical Autonomy Project: Bibliography

An unmanned aerial vehicle UAV or uncrewed aerial vehicle , [2] commonly known as a drone is an aircraft without a human pilot on board. UAVs are a component of an unmanned aircraft system UAS , which include a UAV, a ground-based controller, and a system of communications between the two. Compared to crewed aircraft, UAVs were originally used for missions too "dull, dirty or dangerous" [6] for humans. While drones originated mostly in military applications, their use is rapidly finding many more applications including aerial photography , product deliveries , agriculture , policing and surveillance, infrastructure inspections, science, [7] [8] [9] [10] smuggling, [11] and drone racing. The term drone , more widely used by the public, was coined in reference to the early remotely-flown target aircraft used for practice firing of a battleship's guns, and the term was first used with the s Fairey Queen and 's de Havilland Queen Bee target aircraft. It includes elements such as ground control stations, data links and other support equipment. A UAV is defined as a "powered, aerial vehicle that does not carry a human operator, uses aerodynamic forces to provide vehicle lift, can fly autonomously or be piloted remotely, can be expendable or recoverable, and can carry a lethal or nonlethal payload".

The MQB-1 Predator drone was when "CIA officers began to see the first practical returns on their decade-old fantasy of using aerial robots to collect intelligence". The use of robots in warfare , although traditionally a topic for science fiction , is being researched as a possible future means of fighting wars. Already several military robots have been developed by various armies. Some believe the future of modern warfare will be fought by automated weapons systems. However, military weapons are prevented from being fully autonomous; they require human input at certain intervention points to ensure that targets are not within restricted fire areas as defined by Geneva Conventions for the laws of war. There have been some developments towards developing autonomous fighter jets and bombers. However, the largest drawback to robotics is their inability to accommodate for non-standard conditions.

Military Robots and Drones: A Reference Handbook

For centuries, warring nations have sought to lower the risk to highly vulnerable humans on the battlefield, typically by providing protective armor, making soldiers' positions more difficult to detect, or by striking from locations safe from retaliation. Autonomous weaponry has now reached the point where robotic systems can perform some key tasks that previously required direct human involvement. Military Robots and Drones: A Reference Handbook introduces the lay person to a highly specialized topic, providing the foundation necessary for further study in this field. Appropriate for high school and college-level students, as well as general readers with an interest in the topic, the author explains the many military applications of robotics as well as current limitations and disadvantages.
